Greetings once more populace at large! Another warm one out there, this week the dog’s been “pantier” than a Victoria’s Secret catalogue!
Given the glorious heat wave it seems an appropriate time to move forward with a specific piece from last week. In high school they had an introductory economics course during which I had to compose a presentation on water and its corresponding economic entanglements. That assignment had a lasting impact on me. Living where I do it’s easy to lose touch with the fact that vast swathes of the planet are in desperate need of clean water at all times. Not much of an excuse though.
Something else I’ve always retained from that project was a Mark Twain quote I started it with, “Whiskey is for drinking; water is for fighting over”. How incredibly accurate that seems today. If you think we’ve fought wars over oil, a veritable luxury in comparison, wait until water’s scarcity truly becomes recognized… Maybe desalinization will come through before we all kill each other. I’ll start a pool.

Glistening, precious molecule
Treated in ways so often cruel
As other sources started pure
Yet with us could not long endure
Stagnant pool made from flawless lake
A human’s sense of give and take
We poison and toxify life
Withhold our aid from those in strife
Water’s a treasure for all man
Must redistribute if we can
Most important’s wasting no more
I’ll lap it up from off the floor
OK that’s false but I don’t cry
Over milk, though this wets my eye
Each drop that’s left must be cherished
Act now before all have perished.
I do have the recording of the poem included below today. Enjoy!
I feel as though it’s time for me to replace my soap box into the closet and set about normal human things now, Thank you so much for taking time out of your likely stuffed Taco Tuesday for my benefit. I hope it was worth it!
Peace and love and high-fructose corn syrup to you all.
